SSA Representative Payee

Definition

A SSA Representative Payee (Rep Payee) is a Federal Fiduciary appointed by the Social Security Administration (SSA) to receive and manage Social Security Retirement Benefits or Supplemental Security Income for a beneficiary who is unable to manage their own benefits.

The Rep Payee is responsible for

  • receiving the beneficiary’s SSA payments,
  • using the benefits for the beneficiary’s current and foreseeable needs,
  • saving remaining funds,
  • recording of all financial transactions involving the SSA funds; and
  • meeting SSA reporting requirements.
