Social Security Retirement Benefit
Definition
The Social Security Retirement Benefit is a monthly payment from the Social Security Administration (SSA) to eligible individuals.
Eligibility requires at least 40 Social Security Credits through work covered by Social Security, typically equivalent to 10 years of employment.
The payment amount is based on the individual’s lifetime earnings, the age at which they begin claiming benefits (with reductions for early claiming before full retirement age and increases for delayed claiming up to age 70), and any adjustments for continuing work or receiving government pensions from non-covered employment.
