Will - Living Will

Definition

A Living Will is a type of advance directive that specifies your preferences for end-of-life medical care. Unlike a Last Will and Testament, a Living Will takes effect while you’re still alive but unable to communicate your wishes. You can changed or revoke your Living Will at any time while you’re mentally competent.

A Living Will includes information about

  • life-sustaining treatments (preferences for treatments like ventilators or feeding tubes),
  • pain management (directions for pain relief and comfort care), and
  • your wishes regarding organ and tissue donation.
