Executor

Definition

An executor, referred to as a personal representative in some states, is a person or entity appointed in a will to administer the estate of a deceased person (the testator). Executors have a fiduciary responsibility to act in the best interests of the estate and its beneficiaries and can be held personally liable for mismanagement of the estate.

Executors are responsible for

  • initiating probate,
  • managing assets,
  • handling debt and tax settlement,
  • asset distribution, and
  • estate closure.
